Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Virgil van Dijk are among the many past and present footballing icons to pay tribute to NBA legend Kobe Bryant after he was one of nine who tragically died in a helicopter crash on Sunday.
“Rest in peace KOBE BRYANT and all the victims who have passed away in that tragic accident and give all my condolences to family and friends,” said Barca’s Luis Suarez.
Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling meanwhile posted on Twitter: “Rest easy Legend.”
Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe posted: “#MambaForever.”
United States women’s legend Carli Lloyd said: “A true inspiration on and off the court. Gone way too soon. #KobeBryant.”
“My heart is heavy with the news of Kobe Bryant. Prayers go out to his family right now through this unthinkable time,” said fellow USWNT star Alex Morgan.
Neymar, also of PSG, dedicated one of his goals against Lille on Sunday to Kobe, holding up two fingers on one hand and four fingers on the other to signal the Lakers icon’s jersey number before making a praying gesture and pointing to the sky.
He said afterwards: "I went to see the messages on social media at half-time, I saw that Kobe is dead. It is a great sadness for the world of sport, and for all of us.
