The government of Burundi has confirmed that the President of the country Pierre Nkurunziza is dead

.According to an official statement shared on social media from the verified government account, the president died of sudden heart attack.

The president is said to have passed away at Fiftieth Anniversary Hospital where he was rushed on Monday.

"His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi, who died unexpectedly at the Fiftieth Anniversary Hospital in Karusi following a cardiac arrest on 8 June 2020," part of the statement stated.

This confirms rumours which had been doing rounds on social media concerning the health of the outgoing president.

Reports had it that he had been hospitalised with those close to him notingthat his health was in a very critical condition.

The comes just a few days after his wife was flown into Kenya after contracting the deadly coronavirus. The country's First lady is said to have been admitted at Aga Khan hospital after being flown in using a private jet.
