Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta could look to free agents in the transfer market

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is eyeing transfers for January. But several top players could be available for nothing at the end of the campaign. Express Sport now looks at the players the Gunners could sign for nothing.

Jan Vertonghen

It’s extremely rare when somebody moves directly from Tottenham to Arsenal - or vice versa.
But the Gunners hierarchy should be giving serious consideration to the signing of Spurs centre-back Jan Vertonghen.

Arsenal have struggled at the back this season and the Belgium international would be a solid recruit.
Certainly, he’d be an upgrade on the likes of David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding and co.
Whether he’d choose to make such a controversial move, however, remains to be seen.

Ryan Fraser

Arsenal looked at signing Bournemouth star Ryan Fraser before securing the signature of Nicolas Pepe.

And with Pepe toiling in north London, they could choose to go back in for the 25-year-old.
Fraser’s contract at Bournemouth is up in the summer - meaning Arsenal could bring their old transfer target in for zero cost.

There’s only so long the Gunners can tolerate the struggles of Pepe, who cost them a massive £72million in the summer.

Edinson Cavani

Arsenal could lose Alexandre Lacazette, with the France international reportedly weighing up his future.

That would allow them to use funds originally intended for a new contract to keep hold of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

And, as a Lacazette replacement, they could bring in Edinson Cavani.

The PSG star’s contract is up at the end of the campaign.

And he’s been one of the best forwards in world football over the last decade - which would make him a worthwhile signing.

Arsenal XI: Leno, Bellerin, Vertonghen, Luiz, Tierney, Gotze, Guendouzi, Fraser, Ozil, Aubameyang, Cavani
