Former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic could return to the club as coach of the under-23s side according to a claim from his homeland of Serbia.

Vidic retired from football in January 2016 halfway through his second season at Inter Milan, where he moved after a trophy-laden nine years at Old Trafford.

Widely hailed as one of the best signings of the Sir Alex Ferguson era, the centre-back won five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008 during his time at the club.

The first year-and-a-half of that spell was spent as a teammate of Solskjaer, who is now seeking to put his stamp on the club as he embarks on his first full season in charge after replacing Jose Mourinho halfway through last season.

Reports of the United role initially came from Serbian journalist Nebojsa Markovic, who tweeted that Vidic's close friend and best man Nenad Lalatovic had told him about the offer.

Lalatovic said: "Vidic lives in Milan and he is currently considering coaching, he is not yet sure. He was already offered to run Manchester United B.

Revealed: Reason why Paul Pogba was missing from Man Utd's first day back for pre-season training
"I told him, "this is an ideal opportunity if you want to do it - to go back to England, you'll take over tomorrow and Manchester, you have a great name there and I think that's the right decision for you.

"But he has not decided yet. I'm supporting him being coach at Manchester United, as then there is a chance for him to take over the first team in the future."

United's second side have been without a manager since May after Ricky Sbragia left his role after the Red Devils finished sixth in the second division of Premier League 2.
